THATTA: President Asif Ali Zardari said here on Saturday that he was determined to foil all conspiracies against the integrity of the country and democracy.
All political parties were behind the armed forces in the fight against terrorists, the president said at the ground-breaking ceremony of Darwat dam in Thatta.
Mr Zardari said foreign powers were worried about Pakistan as the spectre of militancy continued to haunt the country, but “I am confident that the nation is resilient enough to prevail over forces out to terrorise it into subjugation”.
The president said he would never bow before “political rivals and conspirators” as the masses were the real power.
Talking about the PPP-PML-N alliance, the president said the decision to side with Mr Nawaz Sharif’s party was taken to save democracy, although the PML government had ‘victimised us’.
“The PPP is strong enough to retaliate against conspirators, but we won’t allow these elements to distract us in our resolve to save Pakistan,” Mr Zardari said.
The president said he was leading the party only because of Benazir Bhutto’s confidence in him, adding that he would relinquish the position once Bilawal came of age.
He distributed certificates of ownership among 30 women peasants belonging to Khoso and Shoro tribes.
Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf briefed Mr Zardari about salient features of the Darwat dam.
The project will be dependent on rain water and have a capacity of 119.546 MAF. It will irrigate 80,000 acres of land in Kohistan and last about 100 years.
The dam is located some 70 kilometres from Hyderabad and 135kms from Karachi. It straddles the boundary between Thatta and Jamshoro districts. The dead level of storage is projected at 32.283 MAF.
